The two distinct celebrations of Loy Krathong and Yi Peng coincide in November across Thailand, although the place to be for the biggest celebration is Chiang Mai. For Loy Krathong, small floats holding candles are placed in rivers as offerings, while for Yi Peng, locals and visitors alike light thousands of paper lanterns and release them into the sky for good fortune.

Where to celebrate in Pattaya?
Although most hotels and other such business can cater for this celebration, most people can be found on either Pattaya or Jomtien beach locations, while those living in East Pattaya go to Lake Maprachan.

What is Loy Krathong?
Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November.

Loi means ‘to float’, while krathong refers to a usually lotus-shaped container which floats on the water. Krathong has no other meaning in Thai besides these decorative floats, so Loi Krathong is very hard to translate, requiring a word describing what a Krathong looks like such as Floating Crown, Floating Boat, Floating Decoration. The traditional krathong are made of the layers of the trunk of a banana tree or a spider lily plant. Modern krathongs are more often made of bread or styrofoam. A bread krathong will disintegrate after a few days and can be eaten by fish. Banana stalk krathong are also biodegradable, but styrofoam krathongs are sometimes banned, as they pollute the rivers and may take years to decompose. A krathong is decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, incense sticks, and a candle.

Thai Buddhist Festival: Scenes from Loy Kratong (Loi krathong) celebrations in Phuket, Thailand. The traditional Buddhist festival is celebrated throughout Thailand, lighting up water ways with candle light under a the full moon of November with decorative floats (kratong) made from banana trees and adorned with flowers. Thailand celebrated Loy Krathong on November 25th, lighting up waterways around the country with candle lit floats or “kratongs” made from banana trees and decorated with flowers, incense and candles.
The ancient Buddhist festival is one of the most spectacular and serene occasions in the Thai lunar calendar, held on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month (usually in November), marking the end of the rainy season. Originally a Brahman festival, Thai Buddhists adopted the occasion to honor Buddha and give thanks to the Godess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha.

The candle venerates the Buddha with light, while the krathong's floating symbolizes letting go of all one's hatred, anger, and defilement or attachments.

Romance is often in the air though, as amorous couples enjoy the intimate ambiance of it all under the full moon, releasing kratongs together in a courting ritual, placing strands of their hair and nail clippings in the kratong as a symbol of letting go of past transgressions and negative thoughts.
